Installing Toolkit 1.5 This document describes installing Toolkit 1.5. It contains the same information as Chapter 2, Installing Toolkit 1.5, of the Release Notes. This information is important for both current and new developers. NOTE: After using the installer to install the software, you have to move a number of files and folder. This information is in this document. Installing 3DO Toolkit1.5 software The 3DO Toolkit 1.5 software consists of over 370 MB of tools, examples, and other files. The installation process is therefore modular, with most of the installation performed by the Apple installer and a few files you have to move yourself. The process consists of the following steps, discussed in detail in this section: ¥ Selecting and installing software using the Apple installer script available on the CD-ROM. ¥ Moving some installed folders into their correct locations on your hard drive. ¥ Installing software not available for automatic installation by the installer (optional). Installing Toolkit software using the Apple installer To install the Toolkit software with the Apple installer, follow these steps: 1. Insert the CD-ROM into the Macintosh CD-ROM drive. 2. Double click on the 3DO Toolkit1.5 folder. 3. Double click on the Install 3DOToolkit1.5 icon. 4. Click the Continue button on the splash screen that appears. You now have the option to perform an Easy Install or a Custom Install. ¥ Easy InstallÑinstalls all items available in the Custom Install list. ¥ Custom InstallÑprovides a list of folders and subfolder you can choose from. The default Installer dialog with the Custom Install options is displayed. The items available for installation are described in some detail in the 3DO Release Notes for this release. 5. To determine the size of any of the items, click on the ÒiÓ button to its right. To select an item for installation, click on the box to its left. Caution: Clicking on the box to the left of any item installs all of its subfolders as well. If space is a problem, click on the arrow to the left of each item to display the subdirectories, and click only on those items that you have room for. 6. To install the software in a nondefault folder, click the Select Folder button at the bottom of the window and choose the folder you want to use. By default, all items you select are placed on the boot drive in a folder called 3DO. 7. When youÕve made all selections, click Install. Note: If there isnÕt enough room on the disk to install all selected items, the installer does not perform the installation even though most items it installs actually replace existing items. You may have to temporarily free some disk space to perform the installation. A dialog displays the results of the installation. A second dialog appears after installation is complete. 8. Select Quit from the second dialog to quit the installer. Moving files After you have completed installation, you have to move a number of files and folders into different locations to have a correct system setup. This section discusses: Moving UserStartup¥3DO Moving System extensions Moving art conversion tools Setting up Lib3DO Note: If you previously installed the 3DO software on your system, you will at times be prompted whether you want to replace existing files. For UMemory.h, you are warned that you are replacing a NEWER item. In all cases, you should replace existing files with the files on Toolkit 1.5. Moving UserStartup¥3DO The UserStartup¥3DO file has been updated to facilitate programming for the 3DO system from MPW. New and current users should use the updated UserStartup¥3DO, which is described in the NewTools.ASCII file and the release notes. To work with the revised UserStartup¥3DO, follow these steps: 1. Drag the MPW file UserStartup¥3DO from the top level of the Toolkit 1.5 CD to your MPW folder. The next time you open your MPW shell, you are prompted to locate the 3DO system you are working with. 2. Respond appropriately to the MPW shell prompts. MPW will then remember the locations you specified across sessions. Note: The new UserStartup¥3DO also allows you to use a RAM disk. Moving System extensions Some of the Toolkit 1.5 tools do not work properly if you donÕt have the QuickTime extension installed in your system folder: ¥ The 3-2 PullDown tool requires Quicktime 2.0. ¥ 3DO Animator and 3DO PostPro require QuickTime 1.5 or later. If you are using a 3DO Artist Card, you need the 3DO Artist Driver system extension. To install the extensions, follow these steps: 1. Open the System additions folder at top level on the Toolkit 1.5 disc. 2. Drag the QuickTimeª and QuickTimeª PowerPlug files into the Extensions folder in your System folder. 3. Open the 3DO folder inside the System additions folder and drag the 3DO Artist Driver file into the System:Extensions:3DO folder on your Macintosh. 4. Restart your Macintosh. Moving art conversion tools If you expect to convert source art using Adobe Photoshop or DeBabelizer, you should install the appropriate plug-ins and/or custom code modules, which are not installed by the Installer script. To install the Photoshop Plug-Ins, follow these steps: 1. Open the Artist Tools folder on the 3DOToolkit1.5 CD-ROM. 2. Select the all files in the PhotoshopPlugIns folder by typing Command-A and drag them to the appropriate Plug-Ins folder on your Macintosh. To install the Custom Code Modules for DeBabelizer, follow these steps: 1. Open the Artist Tools folder on your 3DOToolkit1.5 CD. 2. Select the contents of the CCMs folder and drag them to the Custom Code folder on your Macintosh. Setting up Lib3DO The Lib3DO library and all source code for it is available in the Pioneers folder, which is not installed automatically. The following Toolkit 1.5 tools, libraries, and examples require that you install the library and its include files: ¥ Attic libraries and examples ¥ Streaming libraries and examples ¥ EZ Squeeze (Pioneers folder) ¥ 3D Tools (Pioneers folder) ¥ Storage Manager (Archive folder) ¥ 3DLib (Archive folder) To set up the library, follow these steps: 1. Find and open the Lib3DO.lib folder in the Pioneers folder of the 3DO Toolkit 1.5 CD-ROM 2. Open Includes folder and select all files by typing Command-A 3. Drag the files over to the 3DO:Interfaces:_version_:Includes folder on your hard disk. Caution: Do not simply copy the entire folder over and replace the ÒIncludesÓ folder on your hard disk. If you do this, you will delete certain items that are necessary. 4. Select the Lib3DO.lib file (it has the same name as the folder). 5. Drag the file over to the 3DO:Interfaces:_version_:Libs folder on your hard disk. Installing examples and early release software manually (optional) Some files and folders are not automatically installed by the Installer. These files should be installed on an as-needed basis because of space considerations. These files and folders are: ¥ Any Apps & Data folders inside other folders ¥ AIFF Samples folder ¥ Pioneers folder ¥ Archive Folder Apps & Data Many of the folders contain folders called Apps & Data. There are over 40 of these folders, which takes a large amount of disk space. You can install any of these folders by dragging them onto your hard disk. Refer to the on-line release note or readme files within the specific Apps & Data folders for instructions on installing and using the software in that folder. AIFF Samples The AIFF Samples folder can be copied to your local hard drive for use with SoundDesigner 2 or any other program that supports AIFF files. See the release notes and the readme files inside the folder. Pioneers The Pioneers folder contains software from 3DO that has not gone through a formal QA process. This folder contains software that is provided for those users who are willing to risk using preliminary and experimental software: 3DODebug 2.0d27 3DOª PostPro EZ Squeeze 3D Tools Lib3DO.lib Alias Time CD-Browser 2.1b10 3DO CelFormat Photoshop Plug-In There is usually an on-line readme file for each application or tool. Refer to the readme files and/or release notes for each item before using or installing it. Archive folder The Archive folder contains the following items that will be removed from future releases of the Toolkit: 3DLib (replaced by 3D Tools) 3DO Cel Effects Editor (replaced by 3DO PostPro) Storage Manager (moving to 3DO Portfolio CD-ROM) Tools Installing 411 Help files The 411 Help files provide easy access to on-line function descriptions. The 3DO ToolsHelp file (and index file) are new in this release. 411 Help files are not installed automatically by the installer. Prerequisites To use 411 Help, you need to have the 411 Help tool and the appropriate help files available. ¥ Version 3.2 or later of MPW includes 411 Help, but 411 Help is only installed if you select the 411 Help check box in the MPW installation dialog box. To use the 3DO help files, you only need to install the 411 Help tools. (The complete 411 Help installation package includes reference files for using MPW and the Macintosh operating system, which are not required.) ¥ There are two 411 Help files on the 3DOToolkit1.5 CD-ROM. These files are called 3DOToolsHelp and PortfolioHelp, and are located in the Tools:3DO Toolkit Help folder. How to install the 411 Help files After you have installed the MPW 411 Help tools, you need to install the 3DO Help files and configure them as follows: 1. Move 3DOToolsHelp and 3DOToolsHelp.index files, located in the Tools:3DO Toolkit Help folder into the folder on your desktop that you designated as the 411 Help folder. 2. Open MPW. If you have just installed 411 Help, you will be prompted to locate your 411 folder. 3. Select the appropriate folder. 4. From the 411 menu, select Set 411 Help files and select the folder in which all 411 Help files are located. This updates 411 Help so it recognizes the newly installed files. 5. From the 411 menu, select Set First File. You should see the names of the 3DO help files listed in the dialog box. 6. Select 3DOToolsHelp and click OK. You are placed on the Overview page of 3DOToolsHelp. Using Toolkit Help For instructions on how to use Toolkit Help, see your MPW documentation set. Troubleshooting your installation This section briefly lists some troubleshooting information for your installation. Debugger errors If the Debugger does not seem to be working correctly, throw away any old Preferences files, then start it again. Also, look at the section in the release notes that describes which version of the Debugger to use with which operating system version. Hardware errors If you are trying one of the sample applications and the messages displayed in the Terminal window indicate that the sample application is executing, but it is not functioning correctly, check the following: ¥ If the application does not display on the monitor, check the video connections between the monitor and the 3DO Station. Also, check the monitor controls; most monitors must be switched to external input. ¥ If you cannot hear the sound, check the audio connections between the monitor and the 3DO Station. Check that the monitor speaker is turned on and that the sound level is adequate. ¥ If the sound does not match the game display (for example, the sound of an explosion on the left of the screen plays from the right speaker), check to see if the audio connections are reversed. If the Debugger displays the ÒCanÕt communicate with targetÓ error message, you probably have a link error with your 3DO Station. Check the optical link connection and the emulation mode setting on the Station, then close and reopen the Debugger to reinitialize the configuration procedure. Other errors The Macintosh QuickTime system extension is required to use 3DO Animator and some of the video tools. Installing QuickTime is described above.
